Quick Update

I know I've posted some pretty cute pictures of Tessa since activation, but the last several days have been a mixture of highs and lows. Tessa has had a couple of rough days and we realized yesterday that she has a right ear infection. This definitely complicates her level of tolerance with her CI.

We have her 3rd mapping appointment tomorrow at 3:00 at Hearts for Hearing. We are praying that she doesn't get too overwhelmed or deal with too much discomfort during that process. Then at 4:30 we will go see her ENT for a surgery follow up and for him to check the infection in her right ear.

It has been really hard to watch her struggle with such discomfort. There have been moments that we have been at a loss on how to help her and dry her tears :(

Things will level out, we know they will, but it just breaks my heart to watch her be in such distress and not know exactly how to help.

Sweet Changes

Life is definitely changing!

Here's a little recap of some of the sweet moments we've had with Tessa since activation:

~ She smiles more than she did before...I know, right...didn't think that was possible ;)

~ She makes the sweetest noises riding in her car seat (before, she was our 'quiet passenger')

~ She ooo's and coo's on our stroller walks in the evenings

~ She looked up to find me when I said to her "Tessa, Mommy is pushing your stroller"

~ She makes her 'serious face' when she's listening (before, her serious face was reserved for concentration on physical movement)

~ She joined in a 'yelling match' over dinner one night with all her little cousins (she will not be out-shined ;)

~ She is constantly looking around...as if she is trying to put what she's hearing, together with what she sees

~ She engages with Mommy, Daddy and Parker without the constant use of our 'spirit fingers' to keep her attention

~She seems to pay attention to the dogs' barking in the evenings while we're outside playing

We left Tessa's second activation appointment on Thursday with 4 programs for her CI processor. Each program gives her a little more access to sound and has volume control of 1 to 10. We made it through the first program at volume 10 beautifully and transitioned to program 2 for the last couple of days. There have been moments of stress and frustration mixed in with all the sweet and wonderful changes. Tessa has had a little more trouble adjusting to the second program, but we have still been able to keep it between volume 8 and 10. We are hoping that tomorrow she will have adjusted a little better and we can attempt to introduce her to program 3.

It's just another period of time of what we call the "guessing game". Sometimes it is very difficult to know exactly what is causing her distress...but we are doing our best. On top of all of this, she's got a couple of molars coming in too. It's a balancing act for sure...and we are learning just as she is...we want to always know how to help her and keep her motivated. This cochlear implant thing is a whole new world for us. It is incredible that it has opened up a whole new world for her, but it will not be a journey without it's ups and downs.

We are of course overwhelmed, but are delighting in the many moments of celebration along the way! Darin and I just got done talking tonight about how good it is to know that God is in control...because this is beyond anything we are capable of doing or handling on our own.

Tessa is the hardest little worker I know...if she's putting in the time....Mommy, Daddy and Parker are putting it in too, right there with her!

All Eyes on Tessa

Just a little explanation:
The first 55 seconds of this video are with Tessa's CI processor hooked up to the computer and she is only receiving the sound of tones (which she is responding to very positively), once the video makes the transition at 56 seconds, Tessa's CI is turned on and for the first time she is hearing the world (aka: mommy and daddy ;)

It was amazing to talk to our sweet girl...well really...amazing is an understatement!

Activation This Time Tomorrow!

This morning I got a little choked up while I was getting ready for work, just thinking about how much life will begin to change. It is so much less about the expectations of any immediate impact of the activation of Tessa's CI or how she will respond at this point in time. It is more about the amazing potential for growth and a new level of motivation!

I was thinking this morning about how much Tessa loves being outside. Our evening routine has become stroller walks with mommy around our little cul-de-sac. 'Tessa and Mommy' time is very special, very peaceful and very quiet. It's our time just to take it all in and let it all go, all at the same time. Tessa continues to teach me so much. I am so ready to begin teaching her about everything that we see, everything that we hear, and everything that we do. I have a feeling our walks will no longer be quiet walks...but full of conversations about the trees, the birds, the sky, the clouds, the airplanes, the helicopters, the butterflies, the cars, the people coming and going, and the kids playing...conversations about all the things that God has created for us to talk about!

I am so excited about what tomorrow means for us, our family and especially for Miss Tessa. I can't imagine life any different...but I'm so grateful for the opportunity to embrace a new chapter in our lives.

Philippians 4: 4-7
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

I am peaceful about tomorrow. I am rejoicing over the amazing opportunities ahead for Tessa. God knows my heart and my deepest desires for my little girl and I am thankful that by prayer and petition I can rest easy in His sovereignty.

Skilltime

I'm posting all three videos to show the progression of Tessa's new skill! We bought her this new toy last week and it suction cups to her stander tray. I could tell she was really interested in it tonight and she was determined to figure it out...I was right...the third video is a blast!!!

That's our girl!

I wouldn't put it past her to be showing off for the camera! I tried to stay hidden in the first two videos so she wouldn't be distracted by the camera, but then turned her a little so I could get a good view of her working so hard at using her right hand!

Show off your stuff girly...you are AMAZING!

~Whitney

Frilltime

Never thought I was much into tutus...but oh my goodness, I just couldn't resist! I think Tessa loves it!

Chilltime

Mealtime

I haven't ever posted any pics or video of mealtime...it has always been a little challenging and stressful at times, but Tessa is making excellent progress!!! We are so proud of all her hard work!

Tessa still has new teeth coming in...and it's never fun when we catch those teeth with the spoon! It's so sad, but she really is okay!

A Paperclip

Backstory first:
I'm not sure that I've even written about the frustrating experiences we had discussing the placement of Tessa's CI magnet with her doctor. We learned very quickly that the placement of the magnet under the skin, where the external hardware will attach to Tessa's head, is even more significant when you are dealing with a child with multiple disabilities...especially physical. Plain and simple, if the external hardware does not stay attached to the magnet, the CI won't work and Tessa won't hear. Obviously this is a challenge for any infant or toddler with a CI since they ride around in carseats and strollers that can rub on their head, and it's also difficult to teach them to leave it on when it's just too tempting to reach up there and pull it off.

Well, Darin and I (with the encouragement of Tessa's fabulous PT) choose to believe that Tessa will not be in a stroller/wheelchair/whatever-it-may-be, indefinitely. There is obviously the consideration of her need for a headrest temporarily and how the headrest could impact or interfere with the connection of her CI hardware, but the cochlear implant was a permanant decision and we did not want to make a permanant decision based on a temporary scenario. Besides that, there are a million options for headrests for Tessa...plenty of which will accomodate the placement of her CI.

Relevance of "X's"
So, the picture I posted of the two X's drawn on Tessa's head before surgery, was a huge moment for us. We had to take Tessa's headmaster collar and an i2i headrest with us to the hospital to help prove that it was not necessary to do some crazy placement of her CI magnet to accomodate her physical needs. We just didn't feel that having the magnet positioned all crazy-like, more on the side of her head and closer to her face, was an option. Obviously, the further back the magnet, the less noticable it will be over time as her hair grows in and gets longer and the easier it will be for her to wear headbands or bows or to pull her hair up into a ponytail one day maybe when she's ready to cheerlead or hit the basketball court. We did just make a permanant decision for our 14 month old daughter that will impact her physically, mentally and emotionally in all her years to come.

All of the elements of consideration in this one scenario have been enough to cause some pretty intense emotional turmoil. I understand that we are driven by our experiences. And it is obvious to us, in this case, that a doctor's experiences in dealing with children with multiple disabilities such as Tessa's, might be less hopeful and less optimistic then desired. Tessa is not to be sold short...she is not to be put in a box and labeled as anything...she is not to be treated in such a way that is a result of someone's own negative experiences. Tessa deserves every opportunity in the world to achieve whatever her heart desires. Tessa deserves every single ounce of motivation and encouragement...all the way down to a tiny little magnet under the skin on her little head.

And Thus The Paperclip:
When we removed the bandages on Monday evening we weren't sure exactly what we'd find. It all made me a little squeamish...but more the idea of it all than what it actually looks like. Since they didn't shave any of the area around where the magnet was placed, you can't really see anything but you can feel it and there is still quite a bit of fluid and swelling in the area. From what we were feeling, it seemed like the magnet was actually even a little further back than the second "X" that we had agreed upon right before surgery. I haven't spent much time examining the incision, it looked like it was healing fine, so we've been more focused on Tessa's pain level and such. So, Tuesday afternoon we went to our weekly AV therapy appointment. Ms. Tami was super excited at how well Tessa was doing and asked if we had been able to 'find' the magnet. I told her I had felt around a little on it, but that it was kinda weird right now, so we didn't really know exactly where the placement of the magnet ended up. Well, Ms. Tami (with the most tender approach) asked if we would mind if she put a paperclip up to Tessa's head so we could locate the magnet. "Hilarious"....we hadn't even thought of that and after chuckling a minute...watched as Tami got a paperclip to attach to Tessa's head.

These Kinds of Posts are Exhausting:
Okay, so it took me forever to get to the point of the "paperclip" as titled in this post, but there was a lot to cover behind the story and the emotion of this experience. There was some relief in finding the magnet and realizing that it seems to be in a great position, and there was humor in realizing we could have found it with a paperclip...but who'd have thought! I even came to work yesterday and told that story to a few people and shared a few more laughs. Even laughed about not getting too creative about it around Parker so we don't end up giving him any ideas. But last night...the humor and the laughter turned into reality and tears.

I haven't had too many of them...but I consider them my "hard cries". They are the times that are usually surrounded by stressful situation after stressful situation...crammed full of emotion and combined with exhaustion. The kind of cries where I find myself telling God..."you got the wrong momma for all this". There's never enough time to write about all the things that lead up to these moments and I find it difficult to express myself. To write or speak the words about the tears that come with having a magnet in my daughter's head...seems to make it trivial, while the emotions of reality and acceptance are so intense.

I didn't expect to hit such a low. There was so much wrapped up in the surgery and recovery, that I guess now that it's all over, the bottom fell out for me. We have two weeks from yesterday until we get to experience the results of this event in Tessa's life. Two weeks that are suddenly feeling impossible to face. I know the goal, I know the purpose for everything we have put Tessa through...I know it, I get it...it's a great and wonderful thing. But for now, for some reason, a funny moment with a paperclip, has begun to feel a bit cruel.

Now I know Ms. Tami reads this blog...so let me just say...this has absolutely nothing to do with what Ms. Tami did...nothing! She couldn't have been more kind, more compassionate, more sensitive in asking if we would like to use a paperclip to find the magnet. The moment has just become more about the entire reality of the situation.

Celebration Is Near:
So, activiation day is June 22nd. I'm definitely on the roller coaster of emotions, but I really am so excited to have this time of celebration and to get to be surrounded by all of our family. I'll move past this time and into the realm of hope and peace that God has for me!

Bandage is Off!

She knew something was about to happen...it's always exciting when the camera comes out!

Maybe in shock a little here...

But it quickly turns into complete relief and smiles!

We've tried so many times to get Tessa talking on video. She talks all the time but always ends up distracted by the camera. I was so thankful to capture some sweet talking here...it was so important to me to get this on video at least once before everything changes here in a couple of weeks with her CI activation! Love love to hear my sweet girl's voice! (she's still a little hoarse here from intubation...but it is still so precious!)

Thank goodness Tessa's PT still had the loaner bath chair! She brought it over for us to borrow since we have to be sure and keep Tessa's incision out of the water. Thanks Melody!

Her fohawk was flying high after her first bath in 4 days!

It's really hard to believe that's it! It was pretty swollen when we first took the bandage off so we couldn't get a good picture of it. But this is what it looks like now and it's healing up just perfectly!

CI Recovery

Recovery has gone good! Follow up appointment was this afternoon...everything looks good and she is healing up nicely.
